GSA clubs are the seeds of queer futures, planted in the often-hostile soil of schools. These seeds must be protected, nurtured, and given the space to regenerate. TQ2S+ youth leaders, now is the time to fortify your club through Liberatory Logistics. A method we use here at GSA Network for sustainable movement building.
As seasons change, so too must our strategies evolve to ensure that GSAs continue to thrive despite administrative oppression. We must find our pace—honoring the natural rhythms of organizing—and our space—building infrastructure that sustains our efforts beyond the current moment.
ATTN: This Moment is Only Sorta New…Now is [Still] the Time to Fortify Your Club
For decades, GSAs have served as refuges for TQ2S+ young people in schools, offering physical, socio-emotional, and spiritual safety that is often absent elsewhere on campus or in the broader community. Youth agency is constantly undermined and capitalized upon by institutional forces that seek to control and profit from their labor, creativity, and existence. Schools, as containers, grant young people few rights and place them at the whim of adults who are not their family, making self-advocacy and resistance essential.
Yet, TQ2S+ youth have always found ways to make their conditions better, with or without guidance. Intergenerational and multimedia skill-sharing has made knowledge transfer more accessible than ever before. The moment to fortify GSAs has never passed, it remains urgent and necessary. Liberatory Logistics has two core tenets that keeps us grounded in this effort of fortification: pace and space.
PACE: Follow Nature’s Rhythm
Recognizing life’s natural patterns is a skill, and seasons offer us a guide. When we align with nature’s tempo, our clubs can move in harmony with the energies of the school year rather than against them. This approach allows us to prepare for both predictable and unexpected challenges while resisting the urge to control every moment. Instead, we cultivate a sustainable, collective rhythm.
Gather in the Fall – Homecoming
Welcome each other back to school; set intentions for the year ahead.Support Each Other Through Winter – Truthtelling
Mythmaking, political alignment, resource-building, and mutual aid.Spring Into Action – Spiritsustaining
Leadership training, transitions, and direct action.Freedom Summer – Stargayzing
Reflect, celebrate, and imagine new possibilities.
Throughout all seasons and semesters, document your work. Write yourselves into history. Keep meeting minutes, take photos, maintain a shared album, and create a “how-to” guide for club members and future leaders.
SPACE: Pay Attention to Infrastructure
Schools should be spaces where young people feel excited to learn. This requires safety, both physical and emotional, so students can open themselves to the learning process. The presence of a GSA club on campus disrupts the internalized myth that TQ2S+ young people are isolated and few. It also rehearses what a truly inclusive and safe classroom environment can look like.
However, state control over student freedom to assemble must be resisted. To fortify your club’s presence on campus:
Secure and protect your right to meet at school by starting a petition on GSAsUnite or other engaging in other local organizing efforts.
Find alternative community spaces that welcome your GSA (community centers, public libraries, cafes!)
Fund your GSA club projects and initiatives through Youth Freedom Fund
Seek allies and cultivate relationships with those who will support your club’s longevity.
Build creative governance structures to ensure sustainability beyond your own time there.
The core tenet of Liberatory Logistics is ensuring that the house does not fall when you leave. We must always be preparing for the next wave of young leaders who will inherit this movement.
Let’s create fecund (possibility-making) learning spaces. It’s what we all deserve.
